Who flies weekly decides the corridor more than the skyline.
Shanghai Airport Group is the live flight board. Line 2 is the official metro between PVG and Hongqiao T2 — treat it as a long ride with bags, not a connection product. Maglev only links PVG and Longyang Road. Hongqiao railway station sits on the same hub as SHA T2. Japanese and Korean home leave is usually Pudong. Domestic hops and some East Asia flights sit at Hongqiao. Open 12306 the day you need a passport ticket.

Gates often cannot read a passport. Walk the staffed lane.
China Railway’s English site accepts a foreign passport. The official FAQ: real-name travel; railway staff will not fix tickets bought on other websites. The e-ticket credential is the passport itself — an itinerary printout is not a ticket. Query and refund run 24 hours; sale and change have a night window, tighter on Tuesday — open the FAQ that day. The English desk’s foreign-card checkout is that morning’s screen, not a promise. Failure paths: Trip.com English, a station window, or WeChat / Alipay on the Chinese app (often wants a mainland number). A travel eSIM will not receive that SMS.
Vivienda Weekend Suzhou and Hangzhou default to Hongqiao station, not Shanghai Station. Pick the station name on the ticket.

Same group, two products. Passport plus a foreign card plus English desk: Trip.com. Already on Alipay, chasing a domestic fare: Ctrip. Do not split one journey across both and expect a single change. 12306 will not support another site’s ticket. Airline sites own seat selection and bags. Hongqiao is the high-speed default. Shanghai Station is a different district.
12306 lists Shanghai, Shanghai Hongqiao, Shanghai South and Shanghai West as four stops. A search for “Shanghai” does not fold in Hongqiao. Hongqiao railway sits on the same hub as SHA T2 — Gubei, Hongqiao, Huacao and Qingpu are closest. Shanghai Station (the one named 上海) sits north of Jing’an; some Beijing trains and ordinary trains use it. Shanghai South serves Xuhui and southern Minhang — confirm the train. Shanghai West is sparse; it is not a spare Hongqiao. Spring Festival and a Suzhou Saturday: Hongqiao security queues are real. The “30-minute air-rail” line on a brochure is not a guarantee. Passport holders use the staffed gate.

Same hub. Metro Line 10 links T1, T2 and the railway station; Line 2 serves T2 and continues to PVG. T1 and T2 are not next-door. The 30-minute air-rail story is a walkable hub, not a connection product.

Three other names. Confirm the train before you leave. West is not a backup Hongqiao. South is some Hangzhou / southern workings.
Vivienda Jing’an North / Zhabei leases can use Shanghai Station. Do not mix it with Hongqiao on a Friday.
Official English site. Luggage, a toddler, late night: a car is often simpler. Useful if you already sleep in Huamu / Century Park / Lianyang.

Do not guess the terminal from the airline. Read the PNR: PVG or SHA, then the hall.
Japanese and Korean home leave, long-haul Europe and US, Singapore and Hong Kong night flights: usually Pudong. Domestic hops, some East Asia, same-day air-rail: usually Hongqiao. China Eastern, Juneyao and Spring fly both airports — the PNR is the fact. PVG diagrams currently show T1, T2 and satellite S1; the satellite is a people-mover after immigration. T3 moves only when the airport says so. Power banks on domestic flights: CAAC bans units without a 3C mark, with an unclear mark, or on a recall list — SAMR recall search, take it out at security.
Vivienda Biyun, Zhangjiang, Qiantan shorten PVG. Gubei and Huacao shorten SHA. Still after the school bus.
Long-haul and most North-east Asia. Line 2 and maglev on the traffic pages. One-stop foreign-visitor desks have sold SIMs — hours are not overnight. Temporary driving-permit window exists; do not time a last flight around an old page.
Vivienda Gubei to PVG is a cross-city morning. Ask who flies international each month.
Domestic and some East Asia, plus the rail hub. T1 is Line 10; T2 is Line 10 and Line 2. Parking gates are not a foreign-card promise.
