English modes exist. Villa gates still need a car.
The official metro site and the Metro Metropolis app are the live map. Line 2 is the published rail between Pudong Airport and Hongqiao T2 — long with luggage, not a product. DiDi’s global site documents an English mode; bind a card that actually pays. Huacao and Qingpu “have a metro station” is not door-to-door. Airport black cabs in the arrivals hall are the wrong story; use the official pickup product.

Cash or a mainland QR. A foreign card almost never pays the meter.
Street-hail taxis take cash or a scan. They print a fapiao. Late night, older visitors, and anyone who will not open an app: this is more stable than DiDi. English in the cab is poor — write the Chinese address and the metro station name. At the airport, only the official rank. Do not follow a tout in arrivals. DiDi is the English-mode default for everyone else; use the airport-pickup product so the driver is not trying to enter the arrivals roadway. Ground buses sit on the airport-group traffic pages and change by season — open the table that day, do not memorise a route number. Huacao and Qingpu: the bus will not reach the door.

Temporary permit or a converted licence. Then the chain’s own desk.
Mainland hire needs a Chinese permit. Hertz’s Pudong English desk has said foreign licences, with or without an IDP, will not be accepted. Get the temporary permit or convert first — that is the /transport page. eHi and Zuche publish official sites; a Chinese mobile number is common at booking. International cards can fail at the counter; Alipay with a bound card is the path many desks actually take. Carry the rental contract with a C1/C2 permit. Cars are usually limited to the mainland. Airport permit windows are narrow — do not time them around a last flight from a blog.
Vivienda A household that will drive in week one puts the permit in the same week as the lease. FFC walkers can wait.
