Visa-free Shanghai

240-hour transit, short business trips

The Home88 angle

Most passports can now enter visa-free — 240-hour transit for many, full visa-free entry for others. We keep the current rules in plain English with official sources, plus the short-trip playbook: airport to hotel, payment setup in 30 minutes, and what to see with 3 days.

Transit is not a twelve-month lease

Open NIA the morning you fly. Lists change.

Many passports now enter visa-free or under 240-hour transit. NIA’s English interpretation page (dated 4 July 2025) describes 240 hours for 55 countries with an onward ticket to a third place, and a separate 24-hour port-area transit. Ports and countries have been added since. Work, study and reporting still need visas. Hotels register you; a private flat still needs 24-hour police registration. A 240-hour trip is airport, hotel, payments — then serviced apartments if you stay longer on a real visa. It is not “enter visa-free and sign a year”.

Housing Short visitors use Bund or airport hotels. Assignees wait for the permit before a twelve-month residential lease.

A hotel registers you. A private flat does not.

Twenty-four hours on a private address. Hotline 12367.

Hotels file the stay. A rented flat, a friend’s sofa and an Airbnb-style room still need police accommodation registration within 24 hours. Work, study and reporting still need visas — 240 hours is not a year. Payments on a short visit: a travel eSIM plus a foreign card on Alipay or WeChat often buys coffee; a twelve-month lease still wants a mainland number and a debit card. Serviced apartments pick up when the trip becomes a posting. Open NIA the morning you fly; country lists change.

Housing Bund and airport hotels for 240 hours. Do not sign twelve months on a transit stamp.
