Communities in Shanghai
The same question — where should we live — has a different answer in each language. School, kitchen, Sunday, and where you buy the food you actually cook.
English-speaking
Your languageBritish, American, Australian, Canadian
What actually constrains the decision
- The school picks the corridor: SAS Puxi and BISS point to Huacao and Xijiao; Britannica is on Gubei Road near Wuzhong Road; Concordia and Dulwich Pudong point to Biyun and Jinqiao; Wellington points to Qiantan
- English-speaking property management is not a given. It varies building by building, not by district
- Western supermarkets, a gym that takes a foreign card, and somewhere to watch the match
Worth knowing: Four countries with different habits. Walkability matters to some households as much as the school bus does to others.

Japanese
What actually constrains the decision
- Shanghai Japanese School — Hongqiao campus, Pudong campus, and the senior high school are three different decisions
- Japanese-speaking clinics and dentists — ask the Japanese Chamber directory rather than a casual recommendation
- Ingredients: Japanese rice, miso, sashimi-grade fish. Density around Gubei and Hongmei is far higher than in the Former French Concession
- Bathtub and tatami room — many have been renovated out. Confirm before you view
Worth knowing: A child in senior high locks you to the Pudong campus. Decide the campus before the apartment.

Korean
What actually constrains the decision
- Shanghai Korean School is on Lianyou Road in Huacao — the school and the shopping street are not in the same place
- Daily life runs on Hongquan Road, Longbai, Jinxiu Jiangnan and Jingting Yuan
- Kitchen extraction. Grilling is everyday cooking — ask about indoor barbecue rules in the first minute of a viewing
- Church: for many households the Sunday radius is harder than the school radius
Worth knowing: School in Huacao, life on Hongquan Road. Xijiao Huating works if you have a car; it does not if you shop on Hongquan Road daily.

German-speaking
What actually constrains the decision
- German School Shanghai decides everything else. The Qingpu Eurocampus points to villas, Greater Hongqiao and a car; the Yangpu Eurocampus points to Jiangwan, New Jiangwan and the North Bund, with a thinner service ecosystem
- Working in Taicang or Jiading: households still often live near the Qingpu campus and the adult takes the commute
- Ask about waste separation, garden composting, and whether barbecuing is prohibited
- Bread and cheese — this is a real search, not a joke
Worth knowing: Germans ask about waste separation; Koreans ask about extraction. Same question form, opposite subject.

French-speaking
What actually constrains the decision
- Lycée Français de Shanghai is the hard constraint. The Former French Concession is the emotional one. They pull in opposite directions
- Cheese, butter, real croissants — City'super and the small importers
- CCI France is on Changshu Road, inside the corridor these families want to live in
- Old garden houses: sound insulation, heating and damp are the three things to check
Worth knowing: Settle the school-versus-neighbourhood question before you sign, not after.

Russian-speaking
What actually constrains the decision
- Established community around Hongqiao and Gubei — overlapping with the international apartments there, not with the American circle in Biyun
- Payments and remittance are a bigger pain than finding a flat. Foreign cards get declined at the bank end; carry two
- There is no Russian national school at comparable scale. Most families take the English international route or a distance programme — ask case by case
- Search and community run on Yandex, Telegram and VK
Worth knowing: Payments and remittance take longer to sort out than the flat does. Start on those before you arrive.

Arabic-speaking & halal
What actually constrains the decision
- A halal kitchen, and somewhere to attend Friday prayers
- Schools are usually the English international route
- Do not default these households to the bar strip in the Former French Concession
- Jiahui lists Arabic among its languages — ask about the actual rota, do not treat it as a promise
Worth knowing: Halal groceries, Friday prayer and the school: lock two of the three before a river view. Do not default to the Concession bar belt.

Indian
What actually constrains the decision
- There is no Indian national school at Japanese or Korean scale. SAS, Dulwich and SCIS are English-track seats — pick the campus after the offer, do not inherit Huacao because the last American did, and do not board the Korean-school bus
- Vegetarian is Tuesday, not a healthy weekend. Dals, ghee, the chilli you actually cook with: Hongqiao and Gubei. city’super and Ole’ will not hold a week. Ask Jain / egg-lacto / no onion-garlic before a river view
- A hood that can take tadka. Compound rules on cooking smell die when the committee changes — oral permission is not a clause. First minute of the viewing
- Family residence is a second paperwork track. Do not sign twelve months on a three-bed while the spouse is still outbound. Temple and events: that week’s WhatsApp, not a frozen pin. Google and the employer, not Xiaohongshu
Worth knowing: Lock the spouse timeline and the dal-and-ghee radius before the river view. Building grade will wait.

Singaporean & Southeast Asian
What actually constrains the decision
- SSIS sits at 301 Zhujian Road, Minhang southwest — not Jing’an, not next door to SAS Huacao. First ring: Minhang villas and Zhuguang, some Hongqiao with a car. Thames Town is a wedding backdrop, not a lease
- Banking defaults to DBS or OCBC, both locally incorporated. The China desk is not on the same street as the school — Treasures / digibank CN lives Lujiazui-side; SSIS lives Minhang
- Tuesday dinner is often Malay or Hainanese chicken. A mall Thai set up for photographs is Saturday. city’super’s Southeast aisle is sauces, not dinner. Huacao and Qingpu go thin on a weekday — you backtrack to Hongqiao
- English is not the barrier. Live questions: the bus, and whether the family actually flies PVG (Singapore / Hong Kong night flights) or SHA (domestic, air-rail). No-kids can walk Jing’an; that walk is a weekend if the child is at SSIS
Worth knowing: SSIS is Minhang southwest. A Jing’an walk is a weekend, not a commute. Do not sell Thames Town as the villa belt.

Italian & Spanish
What actually constrains the decision
- No national school at German or French scale.
- Walkable central living usually beats floor area. The Concession is the emotional pull; it does not cancel Qingpu if that is the campus
- Pádel is Saturday social and the court names move. Italian food and coffee score points; they do not pick Hongqiao versus Jing’an
- Two consulates, one European Chamber calendar on Huaihai. Do not send a Spanish family to the Italian building. Huacao SAS is the Anglo default — not yours unless the child is on that bus
Worth knowing: Padel and a walkable Concession are Saturday. They do not cancel a Qingpu campus if that is the school.

Taiwan & Hong Kong
What actually constrains the decision
- Identity and enrolment are not the “schools for children of foreign personnel” rulebook. Ask whether the passport even qualifies before you open the SAS Huacao map. Do not default these households onto the Korean-school bus
- The bilingual track that actually comes up: YCIS (Hongqiao campus → Gubei / Hongqiao; Pudong campus → Century Park / Huamu / Lianyang, not Qiantan by default), YK Pao (Hongqiao / Songjiang, waitlist, interview early — housing is not the international-school bus map), SMIC (Zhangjiang, a private international division, different rules)
- A public international division such as SHSID is a selection-and-identity gate, not a first landing the week you fly in
- Language is not the barrier. These households can hear a Chinese agent; they compare transparency and a contract they can sign in English. Housing follows local premium logic: catchment, commute, long stay — not the school bus first
Worth knowing: A bilingual track is not SAS Huacao. Ask whether the identity even qualifies for a school-for-foreign-personnel seat before you talk bus.
