Healthcare & insurance

Not the best hospitals in Shanghai — the ones with your language, whether your insurance pays directly, and how far they are from the flat you are about to take.

If it happens tonight

120
  • The ambulance is the city service on 120, not a hospital’s own fleet.
  • Calls to 120 are taken in Chinese. Interpretation can be patched in, and that takes time.
  • In a critical case you may be taken to the nearest suitable hospital — roughly 3–5 km — not the one you would have chosen.
  • Payment is usually taken on admission. An international direct-billing card may not work that night.
  • Give the road name, lane number and nearest crossing — not the compound’s marketing name.

Private international

English-language pathways are mature here, and so is direct billing. Addresses and phone numbers below are the ones each provider publishes — open their site the morning you go.

United Family (UFH) ↗

400 639 3900 · 021-2216 3999

Three hospitals and several clinics across Changning, Jing’an and Pudong. The most established English-language pathway in the city.

  • Changning Hospital

    699 Pingtang Road

    Outpatient 08:00–20:00 · Emergency 24h

The first call for Hongqiao and Gubei households with a car.

  • Jing’an Hospital

    1314 & 1320 Beijing Xi Lu

Women and children focused. Walkable from the Former French Concession.

  • Pudong Hospital

Listed on the official Locations page; confirm the street address there on the day.

  • Quankou Clinic

    8 Quankou Road, Changning

A clinic for minor illness, not an emergency hospital.

  • Fengshang Clinic

Minhang, Xijiao. Reachable from Huacao by car; confirm the address on the day.

  • Xintiandi Clinic

First stop for short stays in Huangpu.

Jiahui Health ↗

400 868 3000

A full hospital in Xuhui plus two clinics. The city government page lists English, Korean, Japanese, Arabic, German, Spanish and Russian.

  • Jiahui International Hospital

    689 Guiping Road

    24h

On the Xuhui middle ring — not walkable from Anfu Road.

  • Yangpu Clinic

    99 Jiangwancheng Road, Bldg 3, Floors 1–2

    09:00–18:00

The near option for Eurocampus Yangpu families.

  • Jing’an Clinic

    88 Changshu Road

    09:00–18:00

Outpatient only — not a hospital with beds.

Parkway Health ↗

400-819-6622

Two of its four Shanghai sites sit inside the housing corridors — Biyun and Gubei — which is why families there reach for it first.

  • Parkway Hospital (Minhang)

    1172 Jile Road

Inpatient and surgery. A child’s ear infection does not need to start here.

  • Biyun Medical & Dental

    997 Biyun Road, Jinqiao

Where Biyun families usually end up for ear infections and dental.

  • Gubei Clinic

    776 Huangjincheng Road, 2F

The near option for the Japanese and Korean corridor.

  • Xintiandi MediCentre

    138 Huaihai Zhong Lu, 3F

DeltaHealth ↗

4008-210-277

Cardiovascular hospital in Qingpu plus an outpatient clinic in Gubei.

  • DeltaHealth Hospital · Qingpu

    109 Xule Road

The near private option for German and French families in Qingpu.

  • DeltaWest Clinic · Gubei

188 Hongbaoshi Road, Gubei SOHO Tower A, 3F

Private general practice around the Bund. Close for short stays in Huangpu; a cross-city trip from Huacao.

  • Bund area

Open the official site’s clinic finder for the current address list.

Public hospitals, international departments

Stronger on complex cases and cheaper, with a queue and a Chinese-language process as the trade. For a child’s fever, private first.

Huashan International Medical Centre ↗

A public hospital treating international patients since 1989. Strong on complex cases; the cost structure and the queue are not the same as private.

  • Main campus · 12 Wulumuqi Zhong Lu

Hengfu and Jing’an. Complex neurology is often referred here.

  • Hongqiao campus

In Huacao. Ask whether the international desk is open before going.

  • Pudong campus

    Near Jinqiao and Biyun.

Ruijin VIP / International ↗

The VIP centre sits inside the main hospital. Building number and phone change — check the official VIP page the same day.

Which one, from where you live

A hospital nearby is a bonus. It is not a reason to change school systems — the bus route still comes first.

  • Former French Concession

Jiahui on Guiping Road, UFH Jing’an and Quankou. Huashan main campus for complex cases.

    All corridors
  • Qiantan

New towers here do not have an international clinic downstairs. Plan the trip before you need it.

    All corridors
  • Gubei · Hongqiao

UFH Changning for emergencies; Parkway Gubei and DeltaWest for daytime clinic. From Huacao without a car, 120 is faster than driving yourself.

    All corridors
  • Jinqiao · Biyun

Parkway Biyun in the daytime. Do not assume the Biyun clinic runs a 24-hour emergency room — check the hours before you need them.

    All corridors
  • North Bund

Jiahui Yangpu is the near clinic. SinoUnited around the Bund for general practice.

    All corridors
  • Villas

DeltaHealth Qingpu is the near private hospital. Whether it takes emergencies is on their official site — do not assume it works like the city centre.

What to ask before you need it

Every hospital keeps its own direct-billing list, and the same insurer can be direct-billed for inpatient but not outpatient. Ask HR these five in your first week.

  1. 01

Which policy is the main plan — and is it in your name or the company’s?

  2. 02

Is there a required hospital network?

  3. 03

Is outpatient direct-billed, or do you pay first and claim back?

  4. 04

Does direct billing need pre-authorisation? Surgery, maternity and dental almost always do.

  5. 05

Is there a Japanese or Korean speaking coordinator?

Dental, optical and mental health are commonly excluded. Living next to a hospital does not mean your policy pays there.

Tell us who is coming with you

Ages, any ongoing treatment, and the school run. We will tell you which corridors keep both the bus route and the clinic short.
