Asia’s cocktail lists made Shanghai famous, then emptied half the rooms that chased them. What we keep is the handful that still take a visiting client: English at the bar, drinks that do not depend on a gimmick door, and a night you can hear yourself. Speak Low set the multi-floor template behind a bar-tools shop on Fuxing Zhong Lu. Senator Saloon is the opposite energy — wood, bourbon, two people talking. Neither is a nightclub. Friday in the Former French Concession is usually the wrong night to talk.
Housing Worth a downstairs walk if you live in Jing’an / Xuhui. Not a reason to choose Huacao.

Villa bars and jazz rooms — midweek first.
Cotton’s is the villa-bar archetype: a garden house, not a velvet rope. JZ Club is Shanghai’s working jazz room — official site still lists 46 Fuxing Xi Lu; English listings have also written Hengshan Lu 8. Open jzclub.cn the afternoon you book. Midweek is when these rooms do what expats actually want. Friday volume often wins.
Housing FFC and Hengshan Road leases treat these as neighbourhood. Qingpu and Jinqiao treat them as a planned night.

Since 2004, house bands most nights, the city’s jazz synonym. Tickets on-site or Damai. Passport users treat Damai like any Chinese real-name platform.

The Peace Hotel Jazz Bar is the 1930s room that still works: Old Jazz Band, G floor, 20 Nanjing Dong Lu — Fairmont publishes it. The Long Bar at Waldorf Astoria sits in the old Shanghai Club; Hilton restored the 34-metre mahogany counter. Peninsula’s Sir Elly’s is the river-view dining room on the same strip, not a neighbourhood cocktail bar. The Nest on Beijing Dong Lu is a separate gastrolounge near Rockbund — it is not the Peninsula roof.
Housing A Bund or Lujiazui lease makes these a twenty-minute ritual. Gubei and Huacao make them a car and a babysitter.
G Floor, Fairmont Peace Hotel, 20 Nanjing Road East
Official page: once Horse and Hound, now the Old Jazz Band and vintage cocktails. The room visiting parents actually remember.
Housing Walk from the Bund or East Nanjing metro. Do not plan it after a Pudong school pickup.
Hilton restored the Shanghai Club bar — 34 metres of mahogany in their own copy. Client-safe, hotel-priced, a view if you sit the right way.
