What actually constrains the decision

  • The school picks the corridor: SAS Puxi and BISS point to Huacao and Xijiao; Britannica is on Gubei Road near Wuzhong Road; Concordia and Dulwich Pudong point to Biyun and Jinqiao; Wellington points to Qiantan
  • English-speaking property management is not a given. It varies building by building, not by district
  • Western supermarkets, a gym that takes a foreign card, and somewhere to watch the match

What agents get wrong

Four countries with different habits. Walkability matters to some households as much as the school bus does to others.

Where these households live

Official links

Chambers and business networks

Business bodies, not consular services. Useful for the information flow your employer’s HR is already reading.

  • AmCham Shanghai ↗

Founded 1915. Its white papers and policy lunches are where the HR side of American households gets its information.

Based in the Shanghai Centre on West Nanjing Road — convenient for short stays in Jing’an.

  • British Chamber of Commerce Shanghai ↗

Where the Commonwealth parent circles from Dulwich and Harrow tend to overlap.

Membership is split into corporate and individual — check the Join page for the current terms.

  • European Chamber of Commerce in China ↗

The pan-European body. Useful if your country has no chamber of its own here — but it does business, not consular services.

Faith and Sunday life

Where a community gathers on Sunday is often a harder housing constraint than people expect. Times and addresses change — these link to the official entry, not to a list that will go stale.

  • Shanghai Community Fellowship ↗

An international fellowship of 90-plus nationalities, English service on Sunday afternoon at the Community Church on Hengshan Road. Foreign passports only, including Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan — bring it or a photo of it.

Walkable from the Former French Concession. From Huacao it is a trip into town — worth weighing if Sunday is part of your social life.

  • Catholic and Protestant services in other languages ↗

The city government publishes which churches are open to foreign nationals and in which languages — English, French, German, Korean, Spanish and Cantonese are listed.

Which church, what time, which phone number: all of it changes. Open the official page rather than an old list.

  • Jewish community ↗

Shanghai has a long Jewish history and a present-day community. Start from the community’s own site rather than the museum.

Service times and locations are not published in a fixed list — ask the community directly.

Who to follow in Shanghai

  • Walking footage of the Former French Concession — useful for judging how dense and how walkable that corridor actually is.

  • A teacher's posting, including bringing a dog into China — the pet questions get concrete here.

  • Long-form reporting on people in China, occasionally on families like yours.

  • Raising Shanghai

    YouTube

A long-running documentary series about an expatriate family in Shanghai, running since 2015.

    Search this name on YouTube.

  • National chamber site; Shanghai chapter events live there. YouTube channel ID is public; we still send you to the official home first.

  • Official British chamber.

  • English events desk. Their site prints Thats_Shanghai for the apps. Not a housing list.

  • English venue calendar. A listing is a clue — we still walk the door.

  • 洋盆友

    Douyin 抖音

A team of foreigners filming Shanghai streets. Search the name in the app. Bund qipao is not a lease.

Search this name on Douyin 抖音.
